Focus Area 3

Real-World Evidence & Outcomes Research

Generating outcomes data from Ethiopian health settings to inform clinical practice, healthcare policy, and investment decisions.

Overview

From Clinical Trials to Real Patients

Randomised controlled trials tell us whether a treatment can work. Real-world evidence tells us whether it does work — in routine clinical practice, across diverse patient populations, and under the resource constraints of real health systems.

Outcomes research measures and analyses patient outcomes, healthcare utilisation, and quality of life to generate evidence that complements clinical trials and fills the evidence gaps that policymakers and clinicians face every day.

In Ethiopia, generating local real-world evidence is particularly important: international trial data often does not reflect the Ethiopian patient population, health system context, or disease burden. The chapter and its CORE research centre work to develop Ethiopia-specific outcomes data.

CORE — Centre for Outcomes Research in Ethiopia

Established in September 2018, CORE is the chapter's dedicated research infrastructure for conducting, promoting, and disseminating scientific studies that inform HEOR, HTA, and healthcare decision-making in Ethiopia.

CORE conducts original research, policy analyses, and systematic reviews.

Our Work

Activities in This Focus Area

Observational & Cohort Studies

Designing and conducting observational studies to capture patient outcomes in Ethiopian clinical settings and generate local real-world evidence.

Systematic Reviews & Meta-Analyses

Synthesising existing evidence — including from Ethiopia and the African region — to provide decision-makers with robust, up-to-date summaries.

Health Outcomes Measurement

Validating and applying patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) and quality-of-life instruments in the Ethiopian patient population.

Data-Linkage & Routine Data Research

Working with health facilities and registries to unlock the research potential of routine health data collected across Ethiopia's health system.
